Important Things to Know about Switching Energy Supplier

switching energy supplierAre you frustrated because of high energy bills and often think of switching your energy supplier? If your answer is ‘yes’, there are definite ways to do gas and electricity switch. Here’s how you can do that.

What should You Do First?

The first thing you will have to do is to check if you will be charged for cancelling your existing energy contract. Fortunately not all suppliers let you leave up to 49 days before the end date of your tariff without getting a penalty.

You will need to provide the following information in order to start the switching process:

  • Existing supplier and your tariff’s name (you will find it on your latest bill)
  • Your postal code
  • Your expenditure on electricity and gas (in kWh – kilowatt hours) (This also can be found in the latest bills or also in the yearly energy statement that your supplier sends you).
  • Details of your bank account (in case of switching and if you want to make a payment by direct debit)

Enter all the details in the form of the new supplier and they will search for the best option for you.

What Next?

You might have many questions and may feel scared of the idea of switching your energy supplier. But you need not worry. Here are some questions that consumers commonly have.

Won’t I Get the Supply of Energy in the Period of Switching?

Surely, you will continue to get the supply of energy! Irrespective of who your supplier is your supply won’t have any hitch; the only difference will be in the way you will be charged for the energy. There won’t be any interruption; neither will you have to receive any workmen to install new cables, pipes, etc. Only change will be the company that will bill you.

Will the Switch Come Immediately Into Effect?

No, because the whole process takes at least 17 days. Your new supplier will communicate to the old one and will fix a switchover date and both of them will let you know the date. If you are about to switch both electricity and gas, dates for both may be different; however, you need not worry. You will continue getting energy throughout the switching process.

What Communication should I Expect from the New Supplier?

Your new supplier will send you a welcome letter and package which will typically outline what you have agreed to and details of the new plan. Even the old supplier will contact you but they will ask for only an accurate meter reading to send you the final bill.

Will I Get Two Bills?

No! Your old and new suppliers will agree upon the switching date with each other and so, you won’t get two bills provided you cancel your direct debit.
