Why Should You Turn to Eco-Friendly Drain Cleaners Right Away?

ACT Drain MateIf you are traditionally using chemicals on clogs in sinks, toilets and showers, now better you know what effects these chemicals are causing to your pipes, ecosystem and other people because it’s high time you started using an eco friendly drain cleaner.

Drain cleaners are of two types: enzymatic and chemical. Till now, most of us have used and are using chemical drain cleaners which contain caustic soda (lye or sodium hydroxide) or sulfuric acid. These two are extremely corrosive on not only organic materials but also on most metals. So, while they quickly clean the clog, they burn the inner surface of the pipes at the same time.

Enzymatic cleaners are not as fast-acting as chemicals, but are biodegradable, eco-friendly and free from chemicals, in short they are safe for the planet and for mankind.

What do Chemicals Do?

Chemical cleaners damage galvanized steel, PVC, iron and copper pipes and also fixtures. If the drain is totally clogged, you should never use a chemical cleaner because if you do, the caustic ingredients may eat up pipes while cleaning the organic clog.

What do Enzymes Do?

Enzymatic drain cleaners contain a natural mixture of enzymes that establish a colony that settles in the pipes and consumes organic materials. This process is quite natural and so, is environment-friendly. The action is slow compared to chemicals and may even take one full night. Also you may need additional applications because some proportion of the drain is washed away every time upon using. Any type of antibacterial cleaner or bleach damages this colony.

Harm Caused by Chemical Cleaners

When you pour any chemical down your drain an unused part of it goes to rivers, lakes and wildlife. It starts consuming (corroding) whatever it touches. So, you should use chemical gloves and goggles while dealing with it. Never mix various drain cleaners together because it can produce toxic gas or caustic explosions.

What should You Do?

In the first place, avoid clogs! You can do that by:

  • Not putting fruit and vegetable remnants, cheese, bones etc in the garbage disposal
  • Putting a hair trap in showers
  • Not putting grease down the drain; solidify it and then throw it in trash

But still clogs take place. So, better use eco-friendly substitutes to caustic chemicals, like:

  • A drain snake or a plunger. Use a different one for toilets, sinks, etc.
  • Vinegar and baking soda. Mixing 16 oz of these two makes a great recipe for cleaning the drain. You should let the mixture settle overnight.
  • Plumbers! They may seem a little costlier than chemical cleansers but are economical in the long run as you don’t have to bear the costs of repairing damaged pipes and fixtures. They can also tell you if a bigger problem than a clog has occurred.

Using an eco-friendly drain cleaner is the best option to remove clogs.
