Water Damage Restoration – What to Do Until Help Arrives

libertyextractionmiamiWater is probably the most long-term destructive substance when it comes to the indoor environment. Flooding and excess moisture may cause personal property and structures to rapidly (or steadily) deteriorate. It’s even worse if the water is unsanitary and/or you don’t act immediately. But what can you do before the help arrives? We’ve asked experts from Water Damage Company in Miami to give us some tips on what to do and what not to do while waiting for clean-up and restoration professionals.

Our primary focus must be safety, no matter how severe the water damage seems. It’s important to decide whether it is safe for you and your family to stay in the house. “Slip & Fall” and electrical hazards are things you should keep in mind. Don’t forget that wet materials are heavier than dry, so be careful. Never do any activity that isn’t safe to be performed.

What should you do after the flood? By blotting and mopping, you should try to remove excess water. After removing tabletop items and lamps, try to wipe the excess water from furniture. Wet cushions and upholstery should be removed and propped. You can place wood blocks or aluminum foils between wet carpeting and furniture legs. In summer, turn your air-conditioner on for the maximum drying results. If you have colored rugs and carpets, remove them from wet carpeting. Art objects should be removed to a dry, safe place.

And, what are the things you should avoid doing? Never use vacuum to remove excess water. Don’t turn on your TV, as well as other household appliances. In case your ceiling is wet, don’t turn on the fixtures and avoid rooms where ceilings seem to be sagging. Never leave magazines, books and other colored items on wet floors and carpets. Leather goods and furs should be hung and not left wet in place.
